Bilbao is a wonderful city, located in the north of Spain. This popular tourist destination is famous not only for the nearby beaches but also for the fantastic Guggenheim museum and architectural highlights. Bilbao is part of the Basque country and is with 354.000 inhabitants the largest city to be found there. Especially the Casco Viejo neighbourhood is worth a visit as it is full of culture and a traditional flair.
Not to be missed, once in Bilbao is the old town with its cobbled streets and typical tapas bars and restaurants. Altogether the city is made of eight districts which include Deusto, Uribarri, Otxarkoaga-Txurdinaga, Begoña, Ibaiondo, Abando, Rekalde and Basurto-Zorrotza. The city is also divided into two regions: the New Town and the Old Quarter (also known as “Ensanche” and the “Casco Viejo”). While the New Town can be found near the river and the train stations, the Old Town is located in the heart of the city.

Definitely the city’s most visited attraction and reason for many travellers to visit Bilbao is the Guggenheim Museum. This modern contemporary art museum finds itself located beside the Nervion River and houses works from Spanish as well as international artists. The magnificent construction itself is already worth a visit and impresses hundreds of thousands tourists each year.
Numerous other points of interest can be visited when staying in the city. There are for example a range of museums beside the Guggenheim: the Fine Arts Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Basque Museum to name only a few. The Santiago Cathedral is also well worth a visit and those interested in architecture should not miss the City Hall, the Plaza Nueva, the Arriaga Theatre or the Zubizuri Bridge. Those interested in water sports and beaches will also be more than happy as there are several beaches close to the city which offer excellent facilities for wind surfing and more.
The history of Bilbao dates back to 1300 when Son Diego Lopez de Haro V founded the city. The slowly but steadily growing city soon became an important export port and commercial centre of northern Spain. In 1886 the city built the University of Deusto and became more and more popular with younger people. After recent urban renewals Bilbao has become more attractive and ever since the opening of the Guggenheim museum in 1997, the city’s priority is tourism and no longer industry.
Everyone who is interested not only in the city of Bilbao but also in the surrounding area can visit places such as San Sebastian, Santander or Garika. Ancient traces of Romans can be found throughout the area. Also within easy reach of the city is the 13th century cathedral in Santander or the 15th century medieval castle in Gatika.
